Prior to founding Tortola and Capstan Fund, Steve spent 20 years as an entrepreneur in industries ranging from music publishing to financial services. In 2008, he sold Finworth Mortgage, a firm he founded 5 years earlier specializing in high net worth borrowers and small business owners.
Steve has significant restructuring experience with operating companies ranging in size from $1 million in revenue/20 employees, up to $350 million in revenue/1000 employees. He has re-tooled the operations of businesses in a wide range of sectors including retail, printing, aluminum smelting, manufacturing, construction, trucking, healthcare, and financial services. He has served as Interim CEO/Chief Restructuring Officer for companies including a $200+ million business in the oil industry. He has assisted law firms in investigating cases of fraud and check kiting as well as provided expert testimony in Federal cases. Steve also advises investors who have deployed capital into circumstances that have fallen into distress, as well as worked through multiple distressed acquisitions as well as helped distressed companies prepare for and sell to 3rd parties.
His commentary on credit markets and the economy has appeared in publications such as The Wall Street Journal, FORBES, USA Today, Business Week, Chicago Tribune, Market Watch, Money Magazine, and FastCompany.com. He has appeared on national news media broadcasts, and been featured on radio programs such as The Final Word on Bloomberg. Steve is a graduate of Wake Forest University.
